Two points on that comment, Martin. First, if SSL is enabled on the server, security is not compromised. I'd do that anyway, even with MSCHAP enabled.
Second, with Exchange 5.5, unless you have the mailboxes on your OWA server, plain text authentication is required for communication between your OWA server and your other mailbox servers. I don't know how this may have changed with Exchange 2000 and Front-end/back-end systems.
