I have come to learn that you must be prepared for a potentially long "reindexing" event when you do this upgrade. It *should* take place the first time you start the store after the upgrade, but it *may* cause an error that will require you to do it offline via eseutil.
Given this, you want to make sure to flag the Exchange services as "Manual" startup until you have the OS all happy and up to SP2 with hotfixes and such. At that point, enable Exchange and hope the reindexing goes smooth. ======================================================= Andy Webb [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.swinc.com Simpler-Webb, Inc. [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, October 16, 2001 3:01 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: Upgrade from NT 4.0 Server to Windows 2000 Server Dear DL Members, Wawa is going to upgrade the PDC and BDCs to Windows 2000 Server sometime later this year, or early in Year 2002. Currently, these Servers are NT 4.0 Server with SP 6a. Our Exchange Servers are member Servers (non Domain Controllers) and are also NT 4.0 Server with SP 6a. The Exchange Servers will be migrated to Windows 2000 Server long before we migrate to Exchange 2000. As a result, we will be running Exchange 5.5 Server on top of Windows 2000 for over six months (estimated). Our current ideas for going to Exchange 2000 Server include ..... 01. The Exchange Servers are not Domain Controllers today. 02. The Exchange Servers will not be Domain Controllers after the Windows 2000 upgrade. 03. The Exchange Servers will not be Domain Controllers after the Exchange 2000 migration. 04. Each Exchange Server houses its own Private and Public Information Stores today. 05. Each Exchange Server will house its own Private and Public Information Store after the Exchange 2000 Server migration. 06. The Information Stores will not be "merged" into the Active Directory (showing how little I know). Keeping this in mind, will there be any special steps in upgrading the Exchange Servers from NT 4.0 Server to Windows 2000 Server? That is, anything different than any other member Server? Please inform.
