I recently came upon a situation that required me to attempt to define a GC server for a group of clients accessing Exchange over a slow WAN link. I have tried the suggested method outlined in an article "MAPI Client Directory Access in Exchange 2000" published in the Exchange & Outlook administrator, to force clients to use a specific global catalog server by hard coding a HKCU setting, however I have not been able to get this to work. All of my network captures continue to show the clients communicating with the GC next to the Exchange server. I have deleted the profile and started from scratch several times. The referral process seems to completely ignore the HKCU \\\Exchange provider\DS Server entry that I hard coded. Any help suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
