So you want to allow mail access *before* you have the prerequisite security
in place? Brilliant.
Since you have only 3 weeks before the firewall is up why not just buy them
some POP3 accounts and then create some CRs/Contacts, make them an alternate
recipients and let the Exch Server forward their mail to those accounts?

Subject: RE: Accessing Exchange from Outlook 2k through firewall

To all those who suggested the obvious (RE: Big, bold, V P N).... well, I
guess, thanks for nothing!

Or... perhaps I should have been clearer?

This is a temporary measure until I put in a real firewall. I'm going
through the steps to obtain the money for a real firewall with VPN
management. In the meantime (about another 3 weeks) I must allow access to
remote mail to a select group of employees.

The current (temporary) firewall (appliance) only allows one VPN session at
a time so VPN is not feasible at this time.

I'm not at all comfortable with so many open ports and I though
(mistakenly?) that someone from this group would be willing to help me. It
certainly isn't clear on the MS Knowledgebase.

I no longer have a problem with off-line email and the msg, "Msg: The
attempt to log on to the MS Exchange Server has failed."; that seems to have
gone away for no particular reason.

All I ask is what specific ports require forwarding until I can get the
money I require to purchase a good firewall.

Thank you,
Shawn

(This is my first email to the group so hopefully I'll get this right!)

> I'm trying to access our Exchange Server through a firewall (> utilizing
port forwarding) with Outlook 2000 and Exchange Server support (lan type
connection). By process of elimination, I have discovered that the
forwarding the following ports works (sort of):

23-31,50,80,110,119,123,143
100-150
4500-5000

Obviously, I'd like to narrow down the 100-150 and 4500-5000.
