Thanks, my panic was perhaps a little premature. The file creation stopped
about 30 mins after I'd reset all the logging levels - to my great relief,
as I was down to 30Mb free disk space by then.

Any thoughts on whether I can safely delete these log files?

Look at all the logging levels. Sounds like you missed one.
