BY, IT is always going to be slow as it has to use MAPI interface to do MAILBOX backups=BAD. Try actually using the database backup as normal backups.

Overall it works all right though I am not very happy how slow it takes to backup individual mailbox which I know I have to put up with it. However I find hard to believe that it takes hours to create an image of a tape content too to be taken offsite. I wish I could provide you more details as this is actually implemented a contractor. What I am trying to find out is if there are any patches that I should be aware of to overcome the slowness issues. Thank you.
