  I have seen, on rare occasions, data dependent problems in traffic (be
they mail, attachments, FTP, HTTP, whatever).  Whenever some particular
sequence of bits goes though the wire, it gets mangled or dropped.
Sometimes a different modem at your end will help.  Sometimes it is the line
or the ISP's equipment.  Debugging it is a bear.  If you can, zip up the
files before sending them.  Otherwise, be prepared to spend a lot of time
with a packet sniffer.  :-/
