Stop the MTA. Open explorer and go to the MTADATA where the DATs are located (you may have more than 1 mta directory).
Delete all the DAT files (and ONLY the DAT files). >From your Exchange 5.5 installation CD, switch to the Setup\I386\BOOTENV directory. Copy the contents of the BOOTENV directory to your server and remove READ_ONLY attribute. Start the MTA. No need to re-apply SPs.
