If you need a simple SMTP server to relay across a DMZ, use the SMTP Service that comes with the NT Option Pack.

So, your outbound mail actually goes through X2, which is also your mailbox server. X1 forwards everything to X2. If he sends a message via X2 and X2 makes a DNS resolution and finds an MX record that points to X1, you have a mail loop. So I would see what the exact message that is causing the problem and go through the message headers etc. An idea to avoid future problems of this sort: 1. Uninstall IMS from X2 so X2 becomes a mailbox/pf server. 2. Configure IMS on X1 to be inbound/outbound and use DNS for delivery. 3. Since X1 & X2 are on the same site you won't need to configure anything else. This way X1 will handle all SMTP traffic and X2 will specialize on mailboxe storage. Less confusing, less things that can go wrong. In an environment your size, you don't need two IMS connectors. 4. Lastly have your POP3 users point to X2 for incoming and X1 for outbound mail. Just a thought. There are 2 xchange 5.5 servers, one, X1 is for inbound mail. the other, X2, is where the mailboxes are stroed, the home server. IMC runs on X1 and is supposed to be transfered through MTA to X2. The users connect to X2 w/ outlook. One user, the president, connects to X2 when he is out of the country. The sends out through X2 using IMC set to use DNS for mail transfer. I know this enviroment is harry but I have little input and just am trying to improve it. Lastly on X1 the IMC connector is set to send mail to X2 instead of using DNS. That's it. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Peter Szabo" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Exchange Discussions" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Tuesday, January 29, 2002 6:01 PM Subject: Re: Maximum receipt headers exceeded (possible mail loop). > Can you please describe you environment EXACTLY.
