If you have the Advanced E-mail Option "Allow comma as address separator"
selected, then Outlook will see "mccready, robert" as two separate
addresses -- and will fail to resolve either one if neither is unique to a
particular recipient (as is required for this to work properly).

I've also found this KB article Q246795 to be very valuable when Automatic
Name Checking is failing, though it does not seem to pertain to your
particular situation.
