You might want to make some adjustments to the various smtp timeout values under HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIMC\Parameters. There are several values such as "SMTPWaitForMailFrom" etc. that I've had to modify in the past to deal with slow servers. At my last place of employment our (very busy) Sendmail "smarthost" would sometimes take up to 20 minutes between initiating the connection and then finally getting around to sending the smtp commands. Our default Exchange 5.0 settings of five minutes would cause frequent mail delivery problems. Sendmail would wait a period of time before retrying if it had an unsuccessful delivery to give the recipient server a chance to recover (it assumes the other server has had a problem which has caused it to drop the connection). I upped our timeouts until I stopped receiving the 40xx errors. Hope this helps...
