First of all, if you're trying to recover a message from public folder, you should have restored PUB.EDB, not PRIV.EDB.
Your nightly backups won't affect the dumpster unless the item was deleted more than 14 days ago. Chances are it is still there and you can simply recover if from there. If not, you need to find out exactly when the user deleted the message and restore the PUB.EDB from a prior backup (depending on what your backup cycle is). Read the Exchange DR Whitepaper.
