Yes, and so can the old Exchange 4.0 and 5.0 clients. One of the only differences I am aware of is that older clients (clients older than Outlook 98 with the security patch) will always ask an Exchange 2000 server for the name of the GC server, whereas the newer clients will initially ask the Exchange 2000 server but will then write this info into the local registry (search TechNet for dsproxy)
