He doesnt need the Exchange Agent to do an online Exchange-aware backup of
the store.
Niki, when you browse to the Exchange Server in Veritas, do you see the
Information Store and the Directory as choices?
It sounds as if you chose to do a flat file backup instead. P.S. I would
upgrade BE as well. You are just a bit behind. :)

Don't bother with backing up the individual mailboxes or the Exchange
Agent.. Keep a recovery server handy instead and practice your restores
there.

I don't know what advice you were given, but you cannot just do a normal
backup without stopping the exchange services. The services are
accessing these files while beeing online. That's why the backup program
cannot save them to the tape.

If you install the Veritas Exchange Agent you will be able to backup
your exchange files while your exchange service is online. Furthermore
you can backup and restore user's postoffices. If you backup the whole
database as you think of now, you will only be able to restore the whole
thing at once.
