On a 5.5 Server using V8.6 , all I have had installed is the 8.6 Nt/W2k Remote Agent - not the Exchange Agent. I have been able to back the store up (not the mailboxes however). Maybe I am freak of nature! (Nonetheless, I prefer to do my backups with NTBackup).
