Do the "special mailboxes" have a directory based attribute which is unique to them or do not special mailboxes have an attribute which they do not share? If you created an LDAP query for all mailboxes where Custom Attribute 3 = "Normal Mailbox" and that query was not true for special mailboxes, they would not be included.
