Can you see the folder under PF resoures in Exhange Admin? If yes, then it's still there, if it's not there then your user is a stinking liar. He or someone else with rights to delete it did just that or they moved it somewhere. Do you have DIR set for PFs? If not then I hope last nights backup is good to go!
