2000 eh? I'm not quite sure how you give yourself user rights in 2000. Maybe someone with 2000 deployed can jump in here and offer up some help..... If this is really pressing then have the chap share his password with you and log in as him and clean it up.
Or if it's still the same in 2000, log into the users mailbox via OWA, you should be able to use either his user account or an account with site service rights. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
