There is a program called CPUBURN (do a google search) that is designed to make your CPU work hard (and heat up). This can be run in a dos window or right from dos.
You should also consider running a good ram test. I have had good luck with memtest-86 from: http://www.teresaudio.com/memtest86/ This works from a boot floppy. I always run this or simmtester (www.simmtester.com) on a new machine before installing the OS.
