I prefer hardware RAID, but software RAID gets the job done if that's all
you've got. Depending upon the server and the application you may or may
not notice any tangible performance hit from it.

We have a document server with software RAID1 - it does fine because it's
just a dedicated file server with relatively limited use. We have an
Exchange server with hardware RAID5 - it was higher use and we were more
concerned about performance on that server so we spent more money on it.
