If message tracking is enabled, those logs would be located in \\exchsrvr\tracking.log. They can be used to determine message flow within your exchange site. They are viewable in Excel as well as the Message Tracking function in Exchange.
The logs in MDBDATA are transaction logs where data is written before being added to the information store. You really should consider a backup. Your subject requests a best practice, yet you do not have a backup solution in place? Even run NTBackup on the server. Please get back. I'd love to hear more.
