I enabled clear text and set the default domain to the correct domain
(under directory security for the default website), but still no juice.
To test I went to http://server1/exchange/account and it comes up with
the Username and Password prompt. If I put in just the account and
password the prompt comes back, if I put in the wrong password it comes
back....so something it rejecting it. If I put in the proper
domain\account and then the pass..that is where I get the 500 error.
Weird. I know I must be missing something and I bet it is right in
front of me.

Your right this means you can't see the DC. Make sure your default
domain settings are correct.
