Very, very strange. After about 48 hours, this problem resolved itself!
There must have been a deletion from AD (perhaps the orphaned public
store record mentioned in Q316349) that took a while to propagate or
something. I'm not going to tempt fate by digging any deeper...

Subject: Front-end server OWA problem

I'm trying to configure a front-end server for OWA-only access. Mailbox
access is working fine, but when I go the the /public virtual directory,
I get:

HTTP 500 - Internal server error
    Internet Explorer

After turning off friendly error messages in IE6, I see this error:

        The device is not connected.

In what I'm sure is a related issue, when the Folder List is selected
from the user's mailbox screen in OWA, a popup comes forward with:

    Internal server error.

And the public folders never show up in the OWA folder list. These
errors do not appear on the back-end server.

There is, in fact, no public store on the machine (it was removed per
MS's front-end setup whitepaper), and since there is not SMTP going on,
the Information Store service is stopped (although starting it doesn't
change things).

At first I thought that Q316349 was my problem, but after looking around
in our AD with the LDP tool, I'm fairly certain that we do not have the
"Lost" AD entry that the Q article specifies. Other hits for this error
in the KB mention time synchronization as an issue, but our clocks are
set correctly.

I just thought I'd see if anyone had any insight before I spend another
fast $245.
