Exch 5.5; SP4; Win2K Server; two-server org

The exch admin of a recently-acquired company encountered a problem and
asked for my own input, never saw this particular problem so perhaps the
group might be able to share some experience. A few mailboxes with varying
amounts of content (up to 50Mb of mail) were deleted then recreated with the
same name, email address, etc. Instead of being empty the mailboxes
continued to list their predecessor's content in Mailbox Resources, you
could access the mailbox and all the old mail was still there. Their
creation date even remained from the original mailbox. The other oddity was
that almost exactly 24 hours later the mailboxes seem to have caught up with
their "resurrection" and no longer contain the old content and the creation
date is now acccurate. Any idea on what could have caused this delay in
updating?

I initially suspected the changes had been made on one server in the org and
the visual checking of the mailboxes was being performed on the second, with
a possible replication error resulting in the old info still being visible.
Unfortunately for the troubleshooting process all the work and verification
was being done on the same server. Can't even chalk it up to user error (at
least, not theirs!) as I got into the loop about 2 hours before the 24 hour
reset and confirmed that the recreated mailboxes were indeed showing up as
their old version.
