If you want to force all outbound mail via the front-end, then you need to configure an SMTP Connector with the front-end being the local bridgehead. Also the SMTP connector will allow you to schedule connections and specify different schedule for oversized messages.
Otherwise your SMTP Virtual server(s) on the back-end are capable of delivering mail out by themselves. You do not seem to need creating additional routing groups unless you want to get experience playing with that stuff. Once you start doing routing groups, you will have to create routing group connectors between them. RE: Master - you can switch it around if you want. I would assign Master role to a less busy machine. Although if the less busy machine is your front-end and if it is also exposed to the Internet, chances are someone could hack it and destroy it. In that case I would probably want to assign this role to a better protected machine. Our 2 Back-end servers each have one mailbox store, and our front-end server only runs OWA. Do we need to configure connectors or routing groups? I though they were only for WAN connected servers. Also, in the default First Routing group I see each of our 3 servers in the members folder and the Front-End server is set as the "Master". What is the "Master" and should it be one of the back-end servers??
