PSS helped me out.

The certificate has to be requested using key manager - what they Q articles
never explain is that key manager exists on the Windows 2000 OS, it's the
executable keyring.exe.  I thought key manager went away with windows 2000
and was replaced by the certificate MMC.  For exchange 5.5 it's still
required because with key manager you can manage certificates for each
protocol that Exchange 5.5 supports.

I made a new certificate request and submitted it to verisign, then imported
the cert they provided to me using key manager.

All works well.

My experience was getting a certificate for [EMAIL PROTECTED] didn't permit
getting mail over [EMAIL PROTECTED] for example. You'd need to set DNS up for
one dns name only, which should be ok since you're using different ports.
That's probably not an example of your problem though ?

I'm trying to configure the IMAP protocol to only accept connections over
SSL.  I have obtained an SSL certificate from Verisign and imported it into
the certificate store.  I know that it works because I can connect to OWA
over https without errors or warnings.

In the exchange administrator I have selected the IMAP protocol to only use
SSL.  I have enabled diagnostic logging on the IMAP protocol to maximum.

When I try to connect via Outlook configured to use IMAP(over SSL) it fails.

The event logs on the server show the following event ID 13002 which says
"An attempt to connect an SSL client failed because the server does not have
a valid certificate. "

Does anybody have any ideas what I may have missed?
