Don't assume that. As for EASIEST - go with OWA using SSL. This way ALL your users can view email from the outside, not just the cable modem people. And you leverage existing hardware and software because you already have it all. (as opposed to adding VPN capabilities to your infrastructure)
If you're looking to justify VPN, then remote mail access may be a good reason - VPN is great over broadband!
