Subject: ESM DC shutdown kills client connection-Please help!

Hi, I'm having an odd / tricky issue that needs resolution ASAP..

My co. has one Exch2000 server in Reston, VA, which I manage from
Philly, PA on a W2K DC (Zoe) via Exchange Service Manager. Only ESM is
installed on Zoe, so it should be only an interface to the exch serv (no
exchange guts to it right?). Well, I have 2 other DCs with Zoe in PA,
both have AD and replicate with each other and the VA servers. It is
one Site (even though it's 2 subnets and 2 locations). Anyway, I am
taking Zoe down because I have a new server and Zoe needs to go. The
problem is, 15 minutes after I turn off Zoe, all clients in PA can no
longer access the Exch2000 server in VA. But, with Zoe down I can ping
and resolve Exch2000 and can even browse the folders on it. If you think
you can answer this one now, go ahead.. for more details and clues..
read on ...

PA accesses the Internet via a private T1 that goes to our VA office and
out to the net from there. The PDC root DC resides in VA. Zoe is not a
GC.
A
funny thing is, that all users in VA can still access email when Zoe
goes down, but those who had their PCs and Outlook clients built in PA,
can't even access Exch2000 when they dial in from outside the network.
I have installed ESM on another DC in PA, hoping that it would take over
whatever function the ESM install on Zoe was doing. I have also kept
Zoe down for about 4 hours, hoping that the other DCs would step up..
but no go.

Zoe is needed elsewhere and must be put down (rebuilt) ASAP, but she
just won't let go. How do I get her out of the picture and still have
my Outlook clients access the VA based Exch2000 server?!?

Any help and/or theories will be greatly appreciated!

Patrick
