My client has an NT 4.0 domain, running Exchange 5.5, and they want to upgrade to 2000. The problem I'm having is that they're using SBS Server 4.5 (so trusts can't be used), and they don't want to upgrade their domain to 2000 yet. To top things off, some of their proprietary software for telephony and faxing will not work under 2000. They have a PDC, one BDC, and only want to spend enough money to add one extra machine to the network, so this will have to be runnind AD and Exchange 2000!
My plan so far is to install a new 2000 domain, use the Exchange ADC to pull account information over and install the Exchange 2000 server as a new server in their existing organization. Following this, move the mailboxes from Exchange 5.5 to 2000, and finally configure the organization to use the 5.5 server for sending/recieving any mail destined for external (smtp) addresses. Is this solution possible, or does anybody have any better suggestions?
