Shouldn't have stumped Microsoft. You should've excluded the \exchsrvr directories and the logfile directories too. Call them back and tell them to read their disaster recovery whitepaper at <http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/techinfo/deployment/2000/E2Krecovery. asp> and do a "find" for the word "CAUTION". Avoided the M drive and only backed up the IS, C$, D$ and system state. I have now disabled the backup until I check further if BE can cause such an anomaly. I will test the backup of C$, D$ & IS to see if the system state was hanging it up....not sure though how E2k can get affected by this. Few weeks ago, we started a backup from the main server to the mail server, using the BE exchange agent and backing up the entire mail server and information store (not-BLB). The first backup went ok, but the second backup failed and showed a run time of the whole weekend and then the email cannot receive again. This first happened on the 4th/July holiday when the mail could not come in, but can be sent out. After review, the SMTP service was corrupt and we reinstalled exchange with MSPSS due to their documents for this scenario not being correct. Ended up reinstalling IIS, then full install of E2k and all worked well. Veritas backup bombed and now cannot receive a second time I am checking with Veritas to see what gives...did also notice system state of mail server failed at backup and several E2k open files. Anyone see this behavior?
