I do not believe it requires a reboot.
Are you sure she didnt double delete them or perhaps inadvertently move them
to another folder?

I have already applied the DumpsterAlwaysOn tweak and still couldn't find
the e-mails in question, when trying to recover the deleted items from
either the Sent Items or the Deleted Items.

There is nothing I have to do on the server end, in order for that tweak to
take effect, correct. I need to reboot the workstation it was applied to,
but that's it right?

The items in question should still be in the recovery bin then, if not , she
double deleted them or perhaps in her frustration she hard deleted them from
her sent items and are accessible with the DumpsterAlwaysOn tweak.

Andy/Chris,

Ok...I understand that. But if the person in question deleted them this
morning and IS maintenance doesn't run until tonight, then they have only
been "logically" deleted and not "physically" deleted, correct?

And in that case, shouldn't I be able to use one of the Q articles below?

Jim

Short Answer: Restore from backup.
The Q article you are referring to is to programmatically restore items that
are still restorable and have not been physically deleted ( as opposed to
logically)

Deleted Item Retention Period?

Ok...

Environment:
Exchange 5.5 SP4, Win2000 SP2, non-AD on an NT 4.0 domain.

Currently using the Ed Crowley "Never Restore Method" from the archives:
http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq_appxb.htm. The only difference
currently, is that our Deleted Item Retention time is set for 14 days
instead of 30.

Problem:
User A receives X-number of e-mails between say May 15th and June 30th and
replies to all of them. Her replies are kept in the Sent Items of her
mailbox. Her mailbox goes over it's limit so that she can't send anymore.
She gets frustrated, deletes everything from her Sent Items and empties her
Deleted Items.

Here is my understanding of the process from this point on.
1. When she empties the Deleted Items in her mailbox, the IS looks at the
date of the actual message and if the current date and the date it was
created on is greater than 14 days, it logically marks it as deleted, hides
it from the client and tombstones it. 2. When I go to the client's mailbox
and attempt to recover items from either the Deleted Items or the Sent
Items, I get only those items that are 14 days old or less.

Question:
So...how do I restore a tombstoned item so that it is no longer hidden from
the client application? I think the "Q" article below is what I am looking
for, but as I am NO programmer, I really have no idea how to implement it.
Do I copy and paste the required snippets into a PERL script and run the
script under the Exchange Service account privileges or what?

HOWTO: Access, Restore, Delete Soft Deleted Item Exchange Server (Q232265)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q232265 (may wrap)

XADM: How to View Deleted (Tombstoned) Objects (Q239639)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q239639
This actually looks more like what I need, but after reading it, it seems to
be talking about mailboxes and PF's only, not individual mailbox items.
Maybe I'm misreading it...

TIA for any help you can give...

Jim Blunt
