I've been using Mail Essentials on a gateway machine for a couple of
years and have been pretty happy with it. Between the attachment
blocking and virus checking, it does an excellent job of stopping
viruses (I'm still using the last version before they split it into two
on the gateway). It also reduces the amount of spam that gets through
with a little tweaking of the content filter. One thing I don't like is
that it sends a copy of every virus it catches to the mailbox of the
person designated to process the quarantine. Not exactly safe if you
ask me.

Since GFI released Mail Security while I was still under maintenance for
Mail Essentials, I got to upgrade to it for free. I've been using it on
the Exchange Server in VSAPI mode for about 6 months and it also does an
excellent job of keeping the server virus free (including quarantining
the notice messages from Mail Essentials :-)). I do have a problem
with the way it quarantines things though -- when you release an item
that was an attachment from quarantine in Mail Security, it just
disappears. You have to manually save the attachment and then email it
to the intended recipient. I don't know whether this is a VSAPI thing
or if Mail Security is not handling it correctly or if I am just doing
something wrong.

The few times I have contacted GFI for support, they have been fairly
quick to respond and their answers have been pretty accurate.

Make sure you contact them about educational pricing, they offer some
pretty good educational discounts.

If you have any specific questions, please feel free to email me
directly.

Subject: Any experience with GFI Mail Security?

I am considering moving away from Norton on my Exchange server and am
interested in GFI's Mail Security and Mail Essentials tools. Does anyone
have any experiences with these products that they would like to share
before I plunk down thousands?
