Warren, You didn't say which MSX version or SP level this was on. Guessing MSX 5.5 with a service pack of 2 or below this would not surprise me. Malformed messages were the 5.5 IMS's achilles heel. SP 3 improved it quite a bit.
A problem like this was my first mail server problem from hell as a newbie. I feel your pain! The IMS has 4 queue, two in \exchsrvr\imc called \in and \out. With the IMC service stopped the files can be moved to another folder to troubleshoot. The queue.dat file should be deleted after they're moved. Once they're ruled out move on to the inner queues. Leave them move out of the IMS folders as you may have two corruptions and not know it (yet). The inner queues require a special profile and the MDBView utility found on the exchange CD. The MS KB article that helped me the most thru this was Q165505, but search the online version of the MS Knowledge Base there are others that may apply too. Turning up logging while performing these actions might give more troubleshooting aiding events logged. Make shure your management is aware that repair efforts on this issue may/can result in data loss. Also you may be in a position to view mail data that normally wouldn't reach your inbox, ie security or privacy issues, etc Mike O'Toole messaging consultant Pfizer usa --- "Bennett, Warren Mr 5 SIG CMD" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Hi - I have a recurring problem and the story goes > like this. > > - Deleted mailbox on server with IMS running and > the delete of the mailbox hangs the exchange admin. > This was attempted from a workstation running the > exch admin. > - Checked IMS queues from another workstation > running exch admin and when you click on the drop > down for the queue name in the IMS queue tab and > choose the "Inbound messages awaiting delivery", > this admin locks up as well. > - Users cannot access their mail at this point. > - Go to the affected exchange server and attempt to > restart the IMS service.
