Are both clients also using LMHOSTS files then? Make one and see what
happens. But fixing DNS and WINS is better.

Subject: RE: Outlook startup - fast when profile is new, slow after that

Let me get back to you on WINS. I will test a few things on Monday in
that respect.

However, I am using HOSTS file on both clients to resolve the Exchange
server's IP address. Client #1 connects immediately when creating new
profile and checking the mailbox name. All subsequent connections are
slow. Client #2 always connects fast.

Both clients have Outlook 2000 but different builds. Client #1 has all
the latest Outlook upgrades.

I can see that Client #1 caches the Exchange server's name in the
registry as if it were a domain controller (key
dca740c8c042101ab4b908002b2fe182).
Client #2 does not cache the Exchange server's name in this key.

So I thought that this was a problem with different builds of Outlook
2000.

I did not check to see if WINS client was enabled on both machines. To
think of it, it is most likely enabled on Client #1, I will need to
check on Monday.

Maybe you are right, maybe WINS is interfering with name resolution on
Client #1.

       Thanks!

The first place I would look is DNS and WINS name resolution.

Hi all.

I am chasing something that is causing Outlook to perform poorly. Can't
quite figure it out.

The environment:
Exchange 2000 server. Outlook 2000.
AD Domain controllers are not accessible to the clients, only the
Exchange server can talk to the domain controllers. Exchange server is
configured to not use RFR, all Outlooks are forced to use NSPI proxy.
All the client PCs have an entry in their HOSTS file for the name and IP
address of the Exchange server.

When I create an Outlook profile from scratch and use it for the first
time, Outlook starts immediately. However all the subsequent start-ups
are slow. I always get a pop-up saying that the Exchange server is not
available, Retry or Work offline. After I hit Retry, it connects fine.

I have noticed that after the first connection, a key is created in the
registry: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging
Subsystem\Profiles\jkelly02\dca740c8c042101ab4b908002b2fe182

And it has string value 001e6602=exchange_server_name

Now I have another PC with an earlier version of Outlook 2000 installed
on it. That PC does not experience such problems. It always connects on
the first try. I also noticed that the dca740c8c042101ab4b908002b2fe182
key exists on that PC but does not have any values.

Is this an Outlook problem?

Thanks!
