I think so, and I think thanks to you comments the penny has dropped. Would it be
correct to think of it this way: There is no redundancy between the CAs and the DRCs
since they have different but overlapping responsibilities. I need the DRCs so that
the 5.5 sites learn about each others recipient containers and config stubs (since the
hub is the SRS) but the CAs are needed because being in the SRS is no use to the staff
in NYC since their address book is based on the GC in AD.

Thanks for you help on this

Mike

I think the replication path for the mailbox associated with the new account
depends on where the mailbox was created. I think there are a few
possibilities:

1 - The mailbox is in NY on E2K. The CA between the Domain and the NY 5.5
Site will see it and replicate it to the SRS (assuming that is where your CA
points) and its SRS will replicate it to other 5.5 servers then out to
remote sites via 5.5 DRC.

2 - The mailbox is in Washington on E5.5. The CA between your Domain and
Washington 5.5 Site will match up the 5.5 mailbox and AD account making it
available to E2K. 5.5 DRC replication will replicate it to other 5.5 sites.

3 - If the mailbox were in Chicago, the same type of path as Washington
would be taken but would work through the Chicago Site CA.

Does that match what you see?

Subject: Question on ADC

Scenario (simplified)

E2000 at New York Site (mixed mode Exch & mixed mode AD)
E5.5 at Washington & Chicago
The E2000 server also runs SRS
There are trad dir-rep connectors running between NYC <----> Washington &
NYC <----> Chicago
The dir-rep works in that Washington and Chicago know about each other and
NYC
2 way ADC agreement between AD at NYC and the SRS running at NYC
2 way ADC agreements between AD at NYC and Washington as well as AD at NYC
and Chicago

Everything seems to work, but I cant get my head around the following: If a
new user is created in NYC does the change get replicated to the GAL in
(say) Washington through path (a) or (b)

(a) AD ----> SRS through ADC then SRS ----> Washington through dir-rep

(b) AD ----> Washington through the ADC

This is how MSPS told me to set everything up but it seems like there is a
redundant path. I understand why the dir reps need to be there because NYC
is a hub between Chicago and Washington so that's the way the config stubs
at Chicago and Washington learn about the infrastructure, but why do I need
the ADC agreements between NYC ------> Washington & Chicago

Thanks for any help
