Actually, figured this out and confirmed with our TAM - the mailboxes can NOT be hidden from the GAL. There is no published Q article about this, but here's what they sent me, from another case...
PROBLEM: exmerge fails with Error extracting information from server DN '' (CMapiSession::GetInfoFromProfile) CAUSE Mailboxes hidden from AL RESOLUTION unhide mailboxes and replicate AD Operating System / Service Pack: Windows 2000 Advanced Server Product/ Service Pack: Ex 2000 sp2 Anti-Virus Software: Yes/No Yes Able to exmerge some mailboxes and unable to exmerge others. Verbatim Error Message: Error extracting information from server DN see mapi session::getinfofromprofile" from exmerge.log When he was doing a batch of people, some worked but most failed.
