Subject: Testing the validity of a backup

Hello,

We have a secondary Exchange Server - so we have some type of playground
for testing reasons.

If I wanted to take the tape Backup Tape from our primary Exchange
Server (with a Backed up message store), what do I need to do, to
perform a restore on a different Exchange Server?

I know there are similarities in how SQL and Exchange store their Data -
and I could take a SQL database file, and mount it on a different SQL
Server. What would I need to do, on the other Exchange server, to
initialize a new Mail Store, and then perform a restore from tape - to
make sure all the mailboxes come back? Also, if the restore brings back
all the mailboxes, will they all be "Alien" mailboxes (as the existing
users on the Domain, already have mailboxes on the production Exchange
Server). I am very curious as to how this all works.

This has always been an area of confusion for me, and as of yet, I never
had to restore a crashed server. I NEED to know what to do, when a
server crashes - and will perform some serious reading on that topic.
But in the meantime, I want to perform a sample restore to a different
Exchange Server to ensure the primary Message Store is being properly
backed up from the Main production machine.

Thanks in advance for any information you can throw my way,

Mike
