It's better to do this in Exchange by creating a mail-enabled contact (custom recipient in 5.5) with a target address of your external mail account and making it an alternate recipient on the user (mailbox in 5.5) properties.
If the purpose of what your doing is to replace the mailbox, i.e., the user won't log into the mailbox, then replace the user (mailbox) object with a contact (custom recipient) entirely.
