It can be installed in any domain.  But you should run DomainPrep in the
root domain, as well as any other domain that will have anything at all
to do with Exchange.  Hell, run it in ALL domains regardless!

Some one asked me today and was not sure. Does the first exchange have
to be in the root domain or can it be installed in a child domain? I
said it did but know that I think about it I say you can if the
permissions or set correctly. Or does it have to be in the root to
access the Master Schema controller?
