just download the source and read _ALL_ the READMEs .. make sure to do this in all the sub-dirs (but the top level README tells you where to look and what to read). The src distribution is more current than the bat and covers other newer features (e.g. milter) .. however.. the bat book is useful for debugging.. but this starts to get too involved for a newbie.
