Leave the tombstone at the default. It is possible if you drop the tombstone lifetime to a very low level and then some replication messages get missed, you will end up with orphaned objects.
I did have one instance where PSS advised us to drop the lifetime down to 1 day because we were having issues with replication issues. Some of the recipients from other sites were replicating properly, but others were not. (I'm reasonably sure that rebooting the Dir Repl. Bridgehead fixed the problem and not dropping the tombstone lifetime down so low.)
