I have been using spam assassin on a linux platform since February with much
success. It is easy to configure and works very well. I recently upgraded
to the newest version which adds functionality to preserve the original
message. This is a big plus when dealing with false positives. Some of the
features include white listing trusted mailers, vipul razor support, and
content rating. In my configuration it is filtering email site wide, with a
set threshold. Below is an example of a spam assassin report :

Content analysis details: (30.00 points, 5 required)
SUBJ_GUARANTEED (2.9 points) Subject GUARANTEED
BANG_GUARANTEE (0.5 points) BODY: Something is emphatically guaranteed
MARKETING_PARTNERS (2.1 points) BODY: Claims you registered with some kind
of partner
EXCUSE_14 (0.1 points) BODY: Tells you how to stop further spam
EXCUSE_15 (1.8 points) BODY: Claims to be legitimate email
EXCUSE_19 (0.9 points) BODY: Claims you opted-in or registered
OFFERS_ETC (0.6 points) BODY: Stop with the offers, coupons,
discounts etc!
FULL_REFUND (1.5 points) BODY: Offers a full refund
...

It has worked better than I could have every expected and for free. It is
nice to be able to provide new functionality even with a shrinking budget.

        Good luck,
         John
