They were member servers because the scenario we had worked used a Windows 2003 domain and we started with Exchange 2000, so we couldn't install it on the DC. We later upgraded the Exchange 2000 servers to Exchange 2003 without incident. We had five virtual machines, including two domain controllers, in addition to the console VM.
