I am actually looking for a process for people to sign (digitally) a document then pass it on to the next person. This will be an internal application so the need for an actual key isn't necessary. A date/time stamp would be nice as would some sort of historical tracking.

A digital signature only provides security by showing the recipient that the sender is authentic (by checking their certificate is valid) and that the message hasn't been tampered with in transit. It also carries the senders public key for encryption purposes, if configured. As I understand it.
