It was a bypass? Then how come you eventually found the recovered items in the Deleted Items folder?

(This was followed by a dramatic reduction in my pucker factor.) When following Ed's suggestion to check the views on the folders, I checked the inbox, contacts, and calendar folders. I foolishly overlooked the Deleted items folder, which had a view limiting the items that were seen. Now the question still remains: What could have caused many items (but not all items) from at least 3 different folders to be tombstoned and bypass the Deleted Items folder?
