I have experienced this as well in a pure 5.5 environment. I choose to stop AV, move the mailboxes, start AV and do an on-demand scan. I also stopped the flow of incoming internet mail to it (had it caching on another server). I suspect this also can happen if a user is accessing the mailbox during the move. Does anyone know if this is true?
