When you say "routed", do you mean physically routed, as in SMTP-routed?
Or do you mean that you want user to hit OWA on the front-end server and get connected to his/her mailbox on the appropriate back-end server? If latter, then yes, this functionality is already built into the front-end/back-end design out of the box. Now, about server crashing... well a user's mailbox can only reside on one back-end server at any given time. So if that server crashes, that's it, the user won't see his/her mailbox until that server is up again. Way back there used to be a cluster product called Vinca CoStandby server that was supposed to work over long distance. It wasn't always as good as advertised. I am not sure if it is still around. Legato owns it now. Also there is GeoCluster... never tried it. And then Marathon. Again never tried it. Marathon used to allow a demo download. But now they must be paranoid or something because they only offer their product as a service. I.e. their engineers come out and set it up.
