When you say "routed", do you mean physically routed, as in SMTP-routed?

Or do you mean that you want user to hit OWA on the front-end server and
get connected to his/her mailbox on the appropriate back-end server?

If latter, then yes, this functionality is already built into the
front-end/back-end design out of the box.

Now, about server crashing... well a user's mailbox can only reside on
one back-end server at any given time. So if that server crashes, that's
it, the user won't see his/her mailbox until that server is up again.

Way back there used to be a cluster product called Vinca CoStandby
server that was supposed to work over long distance. It wasn't always as
good as advertised. I am not sure if it is still around. Legato owns it
now.

Also there is GeoCluster... never tried it.

And then Marathon. Again never tried it. Marathon used to allow a demo
download. But now they must be paranoid or something because they only
offer their product as a service. I.e. their engineers come out and set
it up.

Subject: Exchange 2000 high availability...

We are looking into setting up High availability for exchange. We have
two sites, and currently the exchange servers are at one site. I would
like to setup a front-end and 4 backend servers at each site. And the
ability to have all exchange servers running, wherever a user logs in
there mail would be routed through that front-end server. But the most
important thing is to have the ability to take any server down and work
on it without effecting the users. Without out doing an ACTIVE PASSIVE
CLUSTER. Has anyone had any experience with something like this?
