It is my experience that most ISPs limit SMTP access to the IP addresses
they own rather than by authentication.

By authenticated client connection.  When a client connects to the SMTP
server, it is NOT relay.  The client must provide username and PW.

Ummm, if Earthlink didn't relay, than how would any Earthlink subscriber
send their email?
