Ed, thanks for your response.....for troubleshooting purposes I've gone as far as to give full control to everything in the security list for that object, including granting full control to the "everyone" and "authenticated users" security groups. I've also specifically added myself and and a couple of other individual users to that list with full control permissions. I went through and removed every instance of the "deny" permission.
