Am I missing something here?

You are just gonna move a handful of mailboxes from one mailbox DB to another,
is that right? And then remove the old mailbox DB.

If I've stated this correctly: Just do it.

If I have not stated this correctly, please elucidate.

Subject: [Exchange] Exchange 2010 - moving the default database and system
mailboxes

All,

We've got a 200m default database sitting on a 1tb LUN, and we want to clear
the LUN for use - but don't want to cause any outage for the user.

I've perused the two following articles:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/3912.exchange-2010-how-to-delete-the-first-database-and-move-the-system-mailboxes.aspx

http://www.careexchange.in/how-to-remove-default-database-in-exchange-2010-in-a-recommended-way/

and a couple of others, but none of them seem to speak to potential downtime
while the move is happening, either for the mailbox to a new database, or for
the move of the original database itself.

We can certainly delay the move, but we'd like to get it done soonest, as this
LUN is required for other things we're doing on the SAN>

Kurt
